OEd proudly celebrates the inspiring achievement of Maria Adoracion R. Octavio, an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) currently employed as a domestic helper. Her passion for education led her to top the June 2025 Special Professional Licensure Examination (SPLE) for Professional Teachers (Secondary Level).
Octavio’s graduation story reflects the grit of Filipino learners abroad and the life-changing impact of flexible online education.
A Dream Fueled by Sacrifice and Purpose
Like many OFWs, Maria worked in Hong Kong to support her family and provide a better future. Her work demanded sacrifice, yet she remained committed to a goal she had carried for years: becoming a licensed teacher.
“After high school, I worked immediately to help my family. Later on, both my parents fell ill, and I had to prioritize their medical needs. My dream of finishing a degree kept getting pushed back,” she shared.
She faced challenges common among working learners abroad, including limited time, emotional strain, and the realities of balancing responsibilities. Still, she persevered because she believed that her dream was worth pursuing.
Balancing OFW Life and Education

Maria’s journey underscores the real advantages of working while studying, especially for OFWs seeking to build a long-term career while supporting their families.
Despite obstacles such as time zone differences and unpredictable work routines, Maria remained focused on her studies. She proved that determination, paired with the right learning environment, can make goals attainable.
Through OEd’s academic programs, Maria found a system that supported her pace, schedule, and needs as an overseas learner. With access to remote learning resources and a structure built for working students, she was able to keep moving forward until graduation.
Flexible Learning Through OEd
OEd is committed to making education accessible to Filipinos worldwide. For Maria, enrolling in an online school in the Philippines for OFWs was a turning point. OEd’s flexible learning system enabled her to study without compromising her work obligations.
“What convinced me to study at OEd was its flexibility. I didn’t need to leave my job. The platform was easy to use, and the team was very accommodating. OEd gave me back the chance I thought I had lost forever,” she said.
This approach reflects OEd’s mission to provide education without limits, helping learners achieve meaningful milestones regardless of their circumstances and location.
Maria’s Breakthrough Moment
Maria graduated in 2024, marking a major milestone not only for her personal journey but also for her family. Shortly after, she achieved another defining success: passing the SPLE for Secondary Teachers and earning recognition as a Top 2 SPLE Topnotcher.
Her accomplishment stands as a powerful reminder that Filipino excellence knows no borders. Maria’s success is not only a win for her, but also a proud moment for OEd and all learners who aspire to finish their education while working.
Today, Maria is wrapping up her contract in Hong Kong. She’s also planning her return to the Philippines to apply for SPIMS, a government program that hires professional teachers from the OFW community. “That’s why I took the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) before heading home. Because of OEd, I’m finally pursuing the path I’ve always wanted.”
Her journey also echoes the inspiring stories of John Michael Angelo and Bjorn San Juan, which show that when learners consistently show up for their goals, breakthroughs follow.
